Kyle Quincey was ejected in the first period of Tuesday’s Red Wings-Ducks game in Detroit when he boarded Anaheim center Ryan Getzlaf.

In addition to a game misconduct, Quincey was assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding.

The Red Wings defenseman may face further discipline from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety because he made contact from behind when the Ducks captain was in a vulnerable position along the boards. Quincey received a one-game suspension during the 2011-12 season for elbowing Panthers forward Tomas Kopecky.

Getzlaf skated off the ice with assistance and was bleeding heavily from the mouth. During the first intermission, the Ducks tweeted an update on his status.
