The Marlins apparently think highly of Red Sox prospect Garin Cecchini. Unfortunately for them, so does Boston.
According to Peter Gammons, the Marlins approached the Red Sox about Cecchini, who is climbing the ranks of Boston’s minor league system. The Red Sox reportedly told the Marlins that they have no interest in trading the 22-year-old third base prospect.
The Red Sox recently added Cecchini to their 40-man roster, thus protecting him from this month’s Rule 5 draft. Cecchini is coming off a strong season split between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland, and the Marlins, who have a surplus of young pitchers, are reportedly looking for help at third base, second base and catcher. Miami drafted third baseman Colin Moran with the sixth pick in the 2013 draft, but Cecchini still represents an intriguing option for any team.
Cecchini’s most impressive trait is his ability to get on base. He hit .322 with a .443 on-base percentage in 129 games (63 with Salem, 66 with Portland) in 2013, and his career on-base percentage at the minor league level sits at .417. The former fourth-round pick hit seven homers this past season, but his power is expected to increase as he continues to develop as a player.
