The Red Sox might still be in the process of building their bullpen.
Boston has already added relievers Edward Mujica and Burke Badenhop this offseason, but you can never really have enough arms. And according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Red Sox are among three or four teams interested in reliever Carlos Marmol.
Marmol, who is currently a free agent, finished the 2013 season with the Dodgers, but has spent the bulk of his career with the Cubs. The 31-year-old was with the Cubs for parts of eight seasons before Chicago dealt him to Los Angeles in July. Marmol struggled this past season, particularly before being shipped out west.
Marmol spent time as the Cubs’ closer in each season from 2009 to 2012. He recorded a career-high 38 saves in 2008 — a season in which he posted a 2.55 ERA — and saved 34 games in 2011. Marmol was named an NL All-Star in 2006, finishing with a career-high 87 1/3 innings pitched that year.
The Red Sox’ level of interest in Marmol is unclear, but the right-hander will need to bounce back in 2014. He finished the 2013 season with a 4.41 ERA in 49 innings over 52 relief appearances.
The Brewers reportedly are also interested in Marmol.
