Robert Griffin IIIMaybe Mike Shanahan was serious about protecting Robert Griffin III after all.

It seems that Shanahan is not just benching Griffin for Sunday’s game against the Falcons in favor of fellow second-year quarterback Kirk Cousins, but the 2012 No. 2 overall pick will also be inactive for the game, according to Jeff Darlington on the NFL Network. It will be just the second time in Griffin’s career that he will be inactive. He was also deactivated for Washington’s game against the Browns in Week 15 last season.

Shanahan said on Monday that he would consider Griffin’s health and future in making a decision about his starting quarterback for the rest of the season. It appears that he truly is taking that into consideration, as Griffin hasn’t seemed like the same player this season after rehabbing all offseason from surgery to repair his ACL and LCL.

Cousins, who finished the Redskins’ 45-10 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday, will make just his second career start in Atlanta this week. He also started that game against the Browns last season. Rex Grossman is expected to be active and serve as Cousin’s primary backup against the Falcons.
