Report: Robinson Cano, Yankees ‘Oceans Apart’ in Negotiations, No Talks Scheduled Between Two Sides

Robinson CanoRobinson Cano and the Yankees are making very little headway.

Cano has been searching for a monstrous deal in free agency, and the Yankees haven’t given any indication that they’re going to give in to the second baseman’s huge demands. According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the two sides are “oceans apart” in negotiations.

Feinsand reports that there are no talks scheduled between the Yankees and Cano at this time, mainly because the distance between the two sides leaves little for them to talk about. Cano was reportedly looking for a deal worth $310 million, and while his demands have reportedly lowered “very slightly,” the five-time All-Star and the Bronx Bombers still appear to be speaking a different language.

According to Andy McCullough of The Star-Ledger, Cano requested a nine-year, $252 million deal last week and the Yankees countered with a deal worth about $170 million. Perhaps the Yankees will eventually make an offer more in line with Cano’s desires, but New York is reportedly trying to stay below the $189 million luxury tax threshold — a feat that is even more difficult in the wake of signing Brian McCann to a five-year, $85 million contract.

Cano, who is also a five-time Silver Slugger and a two-time Gold Glove winner, hit .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs in 2013. He’s widely considered the best second baseman in baseball and the best free agent available this winter, but Cano is being marketed as a larger-than-life rock star — something he may not be.
