For all of the work he has done this offseason, agent Scott Boras has had a hard time finding a home for two of his clients. Boras’ focus has shifted to the Big Apple.
Boras is trying to engage Mets ownership in talks over Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick.
It’s unclear whether the Mets are interested in making a push for either player at this point, although Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports that the club is listening to and pursuing all options while trying to improve. Ackert suggests, however, that it’s unlikely either Drew or Morales will be in the Mets’ Opening Day lineup.
Since Drew and Morales each received a qualifying offer from his previous club, other teams will need to relinquish a draft pick to sign either free agent. The prevailing thought as the offseason grows deeper is that this draft pick compensation is keeping either player from landing a lucrative, multiyear deal.
Ackert reports that the Mets would be interested in adding Drew on a two-year deal, but Boras is believed to be seeking a three-year contract for the shortstop. The Mets are expected to enter the season with Ruben Tejada as their starting shortstop.
There reportedly isn’t much interest in Morales, whom many view as a designated hitter, as the Mets reportedly want to trade Ike Davis and enter the 2014 season with Lucas Duda as their starting first baseman.
