Seamus Coleman is partying like it’s 2010-11, and he should. That was the last time his goal-scoring touch has been this good.
On Sunday, Coleman scored the opening goal in Everton’s 2-1 victory over Southampton with a sensational strike. His ninth-minute scorcher was his third goal in his last four games and helped Everton continue its pursuit of a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Everton fullback received a pass from teammate Leon Osman, dribbled around Southampton defender James Ward-Prowse and fired a powerful shot past goalkeeper Kelvin Davis into the far corner of the goal.
Coleman’s goal tally for this season stands at five, which is more than he scored in his previous for seasons combined. Before this season, he scored his last league goal in 2010-11. He primarily played on the right side of Everton’s midfield at the time.
Coleman, 25, appears to be taking lessons from free-scoring teammate (and fellow fullback) Leighton Baines, who also scores at an impressive rate for a defender. Coleman might be teaching lessons as well. In the 74th minute, Romelu Lukaku scored the game-winner, ending his own six-game goal drought. Maybe the Everton striker had grown tired of Coleman having all the fun.
