Terrell Owens hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010, but that hasn’t prevented the future Hall of Fame wide receiver from voicing strong opinions.
During an appearance on NFL Network Friday night, Owens shared his thoughts on the Week 17 showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles with the NFC East title at stake. Surprisingly, he thinks that Dallas is better equipped for a victory with starting quarterback Tony Romo unable to play.
“I do,” Owens said, when asked if Kyle Orton gives Dallas its best chance for a win this weekend. “I think it honestly because, again, if you look at this situation, if it shakes out and if it’s a shootout — late in the game — everybody’s expecting [Romo] to throw [an] interception… Again, not to take anything away from what he’s done this year. He’s played spectacular, but going into situations like this, I mean, everybody expects the obvious, and that’s for him to make a mistake. A huge mistake.”
Romo injured his back in a comeback win over the Washington Redskins in Week 16, and he needs surgery to correct the problem. The Cowboys will start Orton against the Eagles, and if they lose, the team’s playoff drought will extend to four years.
Owens played with Romo in Dallas from 2006 through 2008, and the veteran receiver tallied at least 1,000 yards receiving and 10 or more touchdowns in each of those three seasons. Despite their impressive stats, playoff success eluded Romo and Owens as the Cowboys were 0-2 in the playoffs with this duo leading the offense.
