Torey Krug has been one of the top rookie defensemen in the NHL this season — and certainly one of the top American D men — but it is doubtful that the 22-year-old will get an invite to represent his country two months from now in Sochi.
Brian Burke, the Flames’ president of hockey operations and interim general manager who also serves as Team USA’s director of player personnel, joined Dale Arnold and Barry Pederson prior to Calgary’s game at TD Garden on Tuesday, and he confirmed that sentiment about Krug.
The national squad took a look at the young blueliner, Burke said, but his youth will probably prevent him from earning a selection over his more experienced peers.
Check out the video above to hear more from Burke on the selection process and whether sending NHL players to the Olympics benefits the league.
