The Red Sox Foundation and the Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program on Tuesday joined veterans, military families, runners and executives from New Balance to announce the fifth annual Run to Home Base, presented by New Balance.

The 2014 Run to Home Base event will take place July 19. The fundraiser is a unique 9K run and 3K walk through scenic Boston that ends with a once-in-a-lifetime experience of finishing the race by crossing Fenway Park’s famed home plate.

The Fenway Park fundraiser supports Home Base efforts to help Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and families heal the invisible wounds of war — post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury — through clinical care, education and research.

“With American troops on the ground in every corner of the world, it is critically important that we remember and do everything we can to help these brave service men and women and their families,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said. “With New Balance’s support, this wonderful fundraiser will serve as a community-wide opportunity to thank these courageous warriors for everything they have done, and continue to do, for our country.”

Home Base program executive director/brigadier general (ret.) Jack A. Hammond, U.S. military veterans and families, New Balance president and CEO Rob DeMartini, NESN anchor Tom Caron and Red Sox Foundation executive director Gena Borson were among those in attendance for Tuesday’s announcement at Boston’s Copley New Balance Store.
