The Boston Red Sox’ incredible depth in 2013 led to a World Series celebration in Boston this past October. The Red Sox added some more of that coveted depth for 2014 with the signing of veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
The 37-year-old backstop brings his offensive prowess to the team as he is a career .283 hitter, as well as his competitive fire. While Pierzynski’s reputation as a polarizing player might be worrisome for a team that valued chemistry as much as the Red Sox, Jonny Gomes and other players have already squashed those concerns. He brings a strong desire to win and the Red Sox don’t see any issues arising in the clubhouse with that kind of attitude.
MLB.com Red Sox reporter Ian Browne breaks down the signing, potential concerns and Pierzynski’s skill set in the latest episode of Red Sox Report. Check it out in the video above.
