Andrew Luck dug the Indianapolis Colts into their 28-point hole, but he was also responsible for digging them back out.
Luck threw three interceptions to help the Chiefs build their commanding 38-10 lead early in the third quarter, but he threw four touchdown passes in the second half to lead Indy all the way back to a 45-44 win. Luck’s late-game heroics were so impressive that he even earned some noteworthy praise from Colts general manager Ryan Grigson, who compared the second-year quarterback to Michael Jordan.
“He’s always been a different animal in the fourth quarter, his whole life,” Grigson said. “And just even hearing the story from his uncle [and agent, Will Wilson]. He relishes those moments. It’s like Jordan when he’d take that last shot — he wants the ball. This guy, we’re so blessed, he wants the ball in those situations. Other guys don’t want the ball; they want to hand it off. They don’t really want it — they’re gonna be half-stepping it. This kid is gonna rear back and throw a bomb when he has all the pressure on him. And that’s a thing of beauty. You’re born with that.”
The “bomb” Grigson was referring to was Luck’s 64-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver T.Y. Hilton with 4:21 left that gave the Colts their first lead of the game and ultimately the win. The comeback marked Luck’s fourth fourth-quarter comeback this season and the 11th in his two-year career, which are some numbers worthy of some lofty comparisons.
The Colts now move onto a divisional round showdown with the Patriots in Foxboro on Saturday at 8:15 p.m.
