NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spent some time talking about potential rule changes on Monday night, but his list might not have been quite broad enough to incorporate all the changes the league needs to make.
Goodell talked with the NFL Network’s Rich Eisen about the possibility of eliminating point-after attempts (PATs) from the game as well as looking into expanded review for penalized hits. Both issues have to do specifically with player safety. Very few, if any, PATs are missed each season, but there remains a high risk for concussions or injuries on the plays.
As for the penalty reviews, some players were penalized for legal hits this season. Penalizing players for clean hits could force them to fall out of proper hitting habits and into bad techniques if that persists.
While both changes are somewhat controversial — but, at the very least, worth exploring — Goodell didn’t even scrape the surface, as there are plenty of controversial rules that could use some attention. Some smaller in-game rules could definitely use some further consideration from the competition committee, but a few bigger picture items, like the playoff system and practice guidelines, could also use some fixing.
