Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t walking through that door, and as soon as one Manchester United fan gets that through his head, greater Manchester will be a little safer.
Shortly after United’s shock elimination from the League Cup by Sunderland on Wednesday, a United fan called the police emergency line, 9-9-9 (Britain’s version of America’s 9-1-1), with only one thing on his mind. The fan, who police say was drunk, wanted to speak to former United manager Ferguson about the state of his team. When a police staff member asked him if he wanted to report a crime, the caller could only point to United’s recent performances.
United trails league-leader Arsenal by 14 points in the Premier League and has been knocked out of both domestic cups, leaving the UEFA Champions League as its only chance to win a trophy this season — and that’s a long-shot.
Ferguson retired in May after 27 years as United manager. He led United to the Premier League title in his final season before handing the reigns to his hand-picked successor David Moyes. United has struggled in the early days of Moyes’ tenure, but Ferguson has told anyone who cares to listen that he will not return as United manager under any circumstances.
Apparently the fan didn’t get the message before he picked up the phone and drunk-dialed.

Cheer up, drunk fan. You might not be able to get in touch with Ferguson, but Juan Mata is on the way.
