The “Legion of Boom” has left a lasting imprint on the NFL over the last few seasons, but the intent of the Seahawks’ secondary has been to change more than just the culture of the team in the process.
The Seahawks have earned a reputation as one of the toughest and heaviest-hitting defenses in the NFL since the start of 2012 as the secondary has taken on the WWE-esque moniker. While the personas of cornerbacks Richard Sherman, Brandon Browner and safety Kam Chancellor have garnered most of the headlines and attention for the secondary, safety Earl Thomas has quietly been the one leading the charge for the group.
Thomas, in his fourth NFL season, helped to develop the team’s new culture. He says the intent was always to extend that change out to the city of Seattle.
“It just started off as guys just wanting to be the best,” he said, according to NFL.com. “We always talked about how we wanted to change, not only the team, but Seattle.”
The next big step in that process comes Sunday, when the Seahawks take the field against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. Thomas acknowledged that winning a Super Bowl takes teams and players to entirely different levels, which is driving him to succeed even more.
“You always look at guys who have had success in this league,” he said. “And those guys were definitely the best at their position, and they have championships under their belt. So, definitely when my legacy is done, I want some championships.”
A championship will definitely change the environment around 12 Seahawks Way, a change that might even lend itself to the city as well.
