Now that the calendar has turned from 2013 to 2014, we can proclaim the arrival of a “World Cup year.”

ESPN holds the exclusive English-language rights to air the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the United States, and the broadcast giant has marked the new year with its first World Cup commercial.

The 1-minute, 45-second spot features scenes of World Cup legends — such as Pele, Johann Cruyff and Andres Iniesta — in action, as well as in-stadium shots of fans enjoying the games.

This is all set against the backdrop of host nation Brazil. Rio’s Cristo Redentor statue and Ipanema beach are just two of the host nation’s many sights, while Samba drummers remind fans that this year’s World Cup will be both a soccer and musical festival.

ESPN will broadcast each of the tournament’s 64 games starting June 12. The time is right to start spreading World Cup fever around America.
