In the world of eBay and Craigslist, sports fans always have to be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, whether it’s for memorabilia or game tickets. Unfortunately, even former pro athletes sometimes learn that lesson the hard way.
Ex-NFL player Warren Moon was recently the victim of a scam that left him out $200,000, according to an investigation by Fox 11 in Los Angeles. The Hall of Famer, who is the analyst on the Seattle Seahawks’ flagship radio station, was approached by a man named George French Jones about buying four courtside tickets and a five percent ownership stake in the Miami Heat.
Moon’s agent wired the requested $200,000 to a bank in California to complete the transaction, and Jones reportedly told Moon that the ticket purchase would act as a down payment for the five percent ownership stake. It turns out that the tickets didn’t exist, and Jones has since disappeared.
Both the NBA and the Heat have contacted the FBI, imploring them to investigate the situation, and Moon’s company, Sports 1 Marketing, is suing Jones despite the fact that no one knows where he is.
Jones has reportedly also tried to get money out of an unnamed Super Bowl champion Patriot player, and an 8 time NFL Pro Bowler.
