Former Denver Broncos guard John Moffitt found himself “bored” with the NFL this season, and on his team’s bye week, he returned home to the Seattle area and walked away from his professional football career for good.
Had he not stepped away from the game, Moffitt likely would be at the Super Bowl with the Broncos this Sunday (not to mention that he started the 2013 season with the Seattle Seahawks before an August trade). But Moffitt says he has no regrets about giving up what most people consider a “dream job,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I was just sick of playing football,” Moffitt said. “I felt I’d played a lot and had gotten to the point where it wasn’t necessarily paying off, and it wasn’t something I was enjoying anymore. I was really unhappy with the whole lifestyle.”
The Seahawks selected Moffitt in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft, then traded the All-American to the Broncos in August. Moffitt played in only two of the Broncos’ first eight games, and when he quit in November, he walked away from an additional $312,500 he would have made had he finished the season — not counting postseason and Super Bowl bonuses.
But Moffitt’s heart just wasn’t in the game anymore, and he is confident in his decision.
“The way I look at it is, I did that dream,” Moffitt said. “I did the NFL. I’m bored of it. I didn’t like the way it was going for me. I didn’t like it for health reasons. I’m going to create a new dream.”
Since quitting football, Moffitt has done some radio work and dabbled in stand-up comedy.
