A ghastly injury ended the season for Iowa high school basketball player Lindsey Peterson last month. But she didn’t suffer it on the court.

Peterson, a senior at Sheffield West Fork High, was posing for pictures with teammates in the locker room before a game when she slipped and hit her face on a bench, according to The Sheffield Press (via Deadspin). She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors reportedly needed 100 stitches and three metal plates to repair the gash and facial fractures.

Peterson, who’s also an All-State volleyball player, might require plastic surgery in the future to remedy nerve damage.

“It was the worst thing I’ve seen,” West Fork head coach Rodney Huber told the newspaper. “It went straight through her gum, affected a few of her teeth and she had a big gash on the right side of her face.”

The injury, which occurred on Peterson’s 18th birthday, will sideline her for at least six weeks, Huber said, ending her high school basketball career.

Peterson’s injury reportedly left her teammates shaken, but they didn’t show it on the court. West Fork scored 40 of the first 50 points against Riceville later that night en route to a 55-18 win.
