BOSTON — The Red Sox’ clubhouse might have a little less hair this season.
Jonny Gomes, who along with Mike Napoli helped spearhead Boston’s beard movement during the Red Sox’ 2013 World Series season, said Wednesday before the team’s annual town hall event that it’s time to turn the page on the facial hair era.
“The beard’s coming off. Oh, yeah,” Gomes said.
This might come as a shock, especially since manager John Farrell said Tuesday that Napoli is still rocking his burly beard. But Gomes’ logic is simple.
“The baseball season is not like a cookie cutter. You can’t win last year. I mean, it’s a clean slate, you know,” Gomes said Wednesday. “You’ve got to highlight the good, bad and in-between.”
The Red Sox’ faces might be smoother in 2014, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be a less entertaining bunch. The defending champs’ search for a new identity is underway, and Gomes once again is at the heart of Boston’s chemistry-building tactics.
“I’m running out of shenanigans,” Gomes said.
Clean slate. Clean shave. The shenanigan search is underway.
