Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel is on some sort of a roll right now, and it’s no coincidence that the Leafs are playing their best hockey of the season.
Just two weeks ago, the Leafs were struggling mightily, with some even wondering if coach Randy Carlyle would lose his job because of the prolonged slump. However, Toronto has turned it around as of late. The Leafs’ win in Colorado on Tuesday gives them six straight victories, and that’s in large part because of a sizzling hot streak from Kessel.
The forward is on a seven-game point streak in which he’s registered six goals and six assists. Over the six-game winning streak, Kessel has scored five goals to go along with five assists. His two goals Tuesday night were the product of eight shots on goal as Toronto rolled to a 5-2 win over the Avalanche.
Kessel is certainly impressing his teammates. Defenseman Morgan Rielly had an interesting way of describing Kessel’s recent run.
“He’s a mutant almost,” Rielly told TSN’s Jonas Siegel via ProHockeyTalk.com.
That would certainly explain Kessel’s season. He’s seventh in the league in points with 52, and his 26 goals are fourth behind Alex Ovechkin, Corey Perry and Joe Pavelski.
