Three-time Olympic ski jump champion Thomas Morgenstern‘s chances of competing in Sochi could be in jeopardy after the 27-year-old crashed Friday during a World Cup training run in his home country of Austria.
Morgenstern, who won two gold medals at the 2006 Olympics in Turin and another at the 2010 games in Vancouver, lost his balance shortly after clearing the ramp and landed hard on his back before sliding to the bottom of the hill.
“Fortunately he was responsive. Thomas can move arms and legs. That’s very important,” team physician Herbert Leitner told The Associated Press. “He asked me what happened.”
It was the second serious crash in less than a month for Morgenstern, who also went down during a jump at the World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt, Germany, on Dec. 15.
