Rajon RondoThe Boston Celtics made some noise Wednesday afternoon, trading away guards Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks. They also sneaked a little Rajon Rondo news under the radar.

Rondo, who is expected to play for the Celtics this week, was assigned to the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Developmental League on Wednesday. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge explained that Rondo would travel to Maine to get a full practice in with the Red Claws.

“Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab, and this is the next step,” Ainge said in a statement. “This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws, and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout.”

After the workout, the Celtics officially recalled Rondo to Boston.

Rondo tore his ACL last season and has been rehabbing since, missing the first three months of this season. He appears to finally be healthy enough to return to the floor, so the Celtics no longer will need Crawford as the primary point guard.

The Celtics host the Toronto Raptors at TD Garden on Wednesday night. They host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, which has been rumored to be Rondo’s first game back on the floor.
