The Boston Red Sox have avoided arbitration with Mike Carp, Junichi Tazawa and Jonathan Herrera by signing each of them to a one-year contract.
The team announced the signings Friday evening.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Carp will earn $1.4 million, Tazawa $1.275 million and Herrera $1.3 million.
Andrew Miller now is the Red Sox’ only unsigned arbitration-eligible player, as Boston agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Burke Badenhop earlier this week. Miller and the Red Sox must agree to terms Friday, or else the two sides will submit contract proposals that an arbitration panel will choose between when hearings kick off Feb. 1.
Carp thrived as a bench player for the Red Sox in 2013. The first baseman/outfielder hit .296 with nine homers and 43 RBIs while posting an .885 OPS in 86 games. There’s been speculation that Carp could be traded before spring training, but he certainly played an important role for the Red Sox last season.
Tazawa emerged as a reliable setup man for the Red Sox in 2013. He posted a 3.16 ERA in 71 regular season appearances, and then enjoyed a strong postseason in which he allowed just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings (1.23 ERA).
Herrera was acquired by the Red Sox last month. He’s expected to serve as a utility player with Boston after spending his first five major league seasons with the Colorado Rockies.
