Stephen Drew might be a possibility for the New York Yankees after all.
The Yankees are considering signing Drew, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. The Yanks exceeded the $189 million luxury tax threshold by signing Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka earlier this week, and there’s a belief that New York now might keep spending in free agency, with Drew reportedly emerging as a potential target.
The Yankees already have spent nearly a half a billion dollars on players this offseason, with Tanaka (seven years, $155 million), Jacoby Ellsbury (seven years, $153 million), Brian McCann (five years, $85 million) and Carlos Beltran (three years, $45 million) representing New York’s biggest expenditures. Signing Drew certainly would bolster the Yankees’ infield, although, according to Heyman, a possible push for the free-agent shortstop “depends on the price.”
Drew, who rejected a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Boston Red Sox at the beginning of free agency, has struggled to find a multiyear deal on the open market. Perhaps that will change now that the Bronx Bombers are in the mix.
Drew hit .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBIs in 124 regular season games last season.
