Plays like this make you wonder how the New York Islanders have been so bad this season.

John Tavares and Thomas Vanek teamed up Monday night on a sensational goal that Rich Peverley and Kari Lehtonen would probably like to forget.

Trailing the Dallas Stars 2-1 midway through the second period, Tavares picked Peverley’s pocket in front of the Dallas net and dropped a pass back to Vanek. After drawing both Peverley and the goalie Lehtonen toward the right post, Vanek slipped the puck between the legs to Tavares, who fired it into the open net to tie the game.

It was the first of three goals and five points for Tavares in what turned out to be a 7-3 Isles rout. The 23-year-old has been an absolute force of nature of late, tallying seven goals and 12 points in his last six games alone. His hot streak seems to have energized his teammates, as well. The blowout win over Dallas was New York’s fifth in its last six games.
