Dennis Rodman made plenty of headlines when he put together a basketball team and traveled to North Korea to play some exhibition games, and now Rodman’s overseas story could be hitting the big screen.
A comedy pitch for a movie called “Diplomats,” inspired by Rodman’s strange mission to the secretive country, has been bought by 20th Century Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Diplomats“ is described as a “two-hander that takes its cues from the antics of the 6-foot-7 former NBA player Rodman, known as ‘The Worm.'”
Rodman has visited North Korea a number of times over the last few years, famously becoming pals with the country’s dictator, Kim Jong Un. In January, Rodman took a group of former NBA players to North Korea, where the team played against a top North Korean senior national team in a birthday gift to Kim.
Rodman got in hot water after the trip over birthday gifts he gave to Kim, including “hundreds of dollars’ worth of Irish Jameson whiskey, European crystal, an Italian suit, a fur coat and an English Mulberry handbag for Kim’s wife, Ri Sol-ju.” Rodman even sang “Happy Birthday” to Kim before the game’s tipoff.
Peter Chemin (“The Heat”) will produce the movie, while Tim Story (“Ride Along”) will direct.
