New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter announced Wednesday via Facebook that he will retire after the 2014 season.

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig released a statement shortly after Jeter’s announcement. Selig said in his statement that MLB has had “no finer ambassador” in his 21-plus years as the league’s commissioner.

Selig also said the league looks forward to celebrating Jeter’s remarkable career throughout the 2014 season, meaning the yearlong farewell tour officially is in full swing.
