Fabian JohnsonMOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany — Borussia Moenchengladbach has signed U. S. midfielder Fabian Johnson from Bundesliga rival Hoffenheim as of next season.

Moenchengladbach says Johnson has received a four-year contract that becomes valid in the summer. Johnson comes as a free agent.

Moenchengladbach sports director Max Eberl says Johnson is a “very interesting player … who can play on both flanks as a defender or attacker.”

Although he won the European title with Germany’s Under-21 national team in 2009, Johnson later decided to play for the United States.

He has 91 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim.
