Legacy, rivalry and tradition — that’s what the Beanpot tournament is all about.
The 62nd annual Beanpot tournament is underway as Boston hockey’s best suit up and face off in a hometown competition that dates back to 1952. Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern have always attracted some talented players, and this year is no different. Combined, the four teams boast 26 NHL-drafted players.
Whether it’s Northeastern goalie Clay Witt and his .945 save percentage or the unmatched power of Boston College’s deadly Johnny Gaudreau-Kevin Hayes-Bill Arnold line, this year’s Beanpot stars continue a legacy of hockey greats who have graced the annual tournament with their presence.
From Olympians to Hall of Famers to legendary coaches, the Beanpot has seen it all. Former Bruins players Don Sweeney and Kevin Stevens got their starts duking it out on the Beanpot ice for Harvard and Boston College, respectively. Hall of Famers Bill Guerin and Brian Leetch saw their share of tournament play during their short stints at Boston College. When it comes down to it, there’s no Beanpot without coaches like Bill Cleary and Jack Parker, who dedicated their lives to playing and then coaching college hockey.
