Lombardi’s official title with the Patriots is “assistant to the coaching staff.” He was expected to have a front office role since he has never served in a coaching capacity.

Lombardi traveled with head coach Bill Belichick, director of player personnel Nick Caserio and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Lombardi was fired by the Cleveland Browns earlier this month after spending just one year as the team’s general manager. Before that, he was a consultant for the Patriots while he worked as an analyst for NFL Media.

Lombardi previously worked with Belichick with the Cleveland Browns from 1992 to 1996. Belichick was the Browns’ head coach, while Lombardi was director of player personnel.
