Michael SamMichael Sam Sr. has taken issue with a New York Times article.

The piece described Sam Sr.’s reaction to his son revealing that he’s gay. Michael Sam Jr. became the first openly gay NFL draft prospect when he announced on Sunday night that he’s gay. The defensive end texted his father the news earlier in the week.

Sam Sr. was quoted as saying he’s an “old school, man and a woman kind of guy” and that “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.”

Sam Sr. told the Galveston Daily News that he never said those comments and that he doesn’t want people to think he has a problem with having a gay son.

“I did not say anything about my grandkids,” Sam Sr. told the paper.

The New York Times stands by their transcription, however. They emailed the Galveston Daily News that Sam Sr. was quoted “accurately and fairly.”

Sam Sr. said the article was mostly accurate. He also said he wishes he had spent more time with his son. The New York Times reported that when Sam goes home to Texas, he spends more time with his friends than his family.
