Mike Trout, Angels Agree To One-Year, $1 Million Contract

Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract Wednesday.

Trout’s deal is the largest ever for a player not eligible for arbitration. Trout and the Angels reportedly have discussed a multiyear contract extension, but “nothing is imminent” now that terms for this season have been reached, a source told MLB.com.

Trout will earn $100,000 more than the previous largest pre-arbitration deals that Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols signed, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register notes.

Trout’s new deal almost doubles the $510,000 he earned last year.

The Angels broke from their typical formula to determine the salary, with Trout’s performance in his three big league seasons so far the main reason, according to Fletcher.

With Trout officially signed for the year, the Angels will stay under the competitive balance tax threshold for the 2014 season. The team is about $15 million below the $189 million limit, according to the Orange County Register.
