The Winter Olympics have a unique draw in the fact that popular NHL players from around the globe participate in the games, representing a range of nations. It might not be that way for much longer, though.
International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel said he is doing what he can to persuade the NHL and its players to participate in the next Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but the decision ultimately rests on their shoulders, according to ESPN.
“I’m going to work hard and do the best I can to get the NHL and NHL players in Pyeongchang,” Fasel said Tuesday in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “I will do everything I can — seven days a week — until a decision is made.
“But ultimately, that decision will be made by them.”
The NHL takes a two-week break during the Winter Games so its athletes can take advantage of the unique opportunity to represent their home countries.
The league and players’ association haven’t committed to players going to Pyeongchang, but one thing is for sure — hockey isn’t moving to the Summer Olympics to avoid interrupting the NHL season, Fasel said. He’s also not in favor of a World Cup of Hockey, which would replace the best-on-best hockey played at the Olympics.
