The Winter Olympics roster freeze is over and the NHL trade market is open for business until the March 5 deadline.
According to TSN, 17 trades were made at last year’s deadline and a total of 30 players changed teams. This year could be a bit quieter because the salary cap is about $6 million less than it was in 2013 and not many teams have an excess of room under the cap ceiling to make moves. Per CapGeek, more than half of the league (16 teams) has less than $7 million in cap space as the deadline approaches, which could make trades involving highly paid players difficult to complete without teams retaining salary.
With that said, there are still plenty of star players who could be dealt at the deadline.
