Norwegian cross-country skier Martin Johnsrud Sundby turned in a disappointing performance at the 2014 Winter Olympics, but his mother’s words might sting more than his 13th-place finish.
Sundby entered the men’s 15k classic as a favorite to medal, but the current World Cup leader struggled throughout the entire competition, finishing more than a minute and a half behind gold-medal winner Dario Cologna of Switzerland. Sundby’s mother, Gro Johnsrud Langslet, watched her son compete from a Norwegian television studio, and her reaction was blunt, to say the least.
“You’re the worst Norwegian,” Langslet said during the competition. “You should go home.”
According to FOX Sports, the harsh words “seemed to be meant as lighthearted banter,” but her language didn’t let up any as her son neared the finish.
”Look at that,” she said. ”He doesn’t stand a chance.”
If Sundby does take his mom’s advice and goes home, he won’t be heading back to Norway empty-handed. Sundby won a bronze medal in the 30k skiathlon on Sunday — an impressive feat that his mother almost gave him credit for after the race.
“He isn’t as bad as this indicates. This is the worst he’s been this year.”
