David Beckham, Don Garber, Carlos GimenezDavid Beckham, Major League Soccer’s newest owner, is considering a throwback when it comes to naming his Miami MLS team.

Beckham might name the expansion team The Miami Vice — after the popular 1980s television show, according to the Palm Beach Post.

“Sources involved with the Beckham group told the Post of three potential identities: Miami Vice, Miami Current and an undisclosed name tied to a corporate sponsor,” the report says.

“Those are not necessarily the only names the Beckham group is considering. However, those three names were used by the group in its recent presentations to the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County and potential investors.”

The potential logo has the letter M on top of the letter V, with a soccer ball occupying the open space in the middle. The team’s colors in the mock-up are a mix of aqua green and dark grey. Of course, these could change by the time Beckham’s team takes the field.

Last week, Beckham announced he had exercised his option to purchase an MLS expansion team. The retired soccer star wants to base it in Miami, but he and his fellow investors need to work with local authorities to build a new soccer stadium in order to turn his dream into a reality.

Beckham didn’t divulge many details during the glitzy announcement and subsequent news conference, but it helped create a buzz for the potential franchise, which could begin play as early as 2016 or 2017.

That time frame gives Beckham’s group ample opportunity to think long and hard about their team’s brand. “Miami Vice” could be viable, but let’s hope they also consider other options.
