The inmate Aaron Hernandez attacked Tuesday at Bristol County Jail was wearing handcuffs that prevented him from defending himself, TMZ reports, citing sources.

The former New England Patriots tight end reportedly got into a fight with another inmate while he was going for a walk in an isolated hallway, but according to TMZ, Hernandez was not wearing handcuffs at the time of the altercation.

Sources told TMZ the victim, who was beaten up “pretty badly,” could “barely defend himself” from Hernandez’s “brutal” assault.

Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said the scuffle lasted less than a minute, and Hernandez could face additional criminal charges as a result.
