Johnny Manziel might not be drafted first overall in May, but the consensus among NFL draft experts seems to be that the former Texas A&M quarterback will be at the very least a top-10 pick.
Don’t count Ron Jaworski as part of that consensus, though.
The longtime ESPN analyst — and former quarterback himself — was asked Tuesday during an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic about Manziel, whom Jaworski’s former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, reportedly met with at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The Eagles’ first selection in this year’s draft isn’t until No. 22, and their current starter, Nick Foles, is coming off a Pro Bowl season — both signs that Manziel heading to Philly is a long shot. Even if the former Heisman Trophy winner is still available when the 22nd pick rolls around, though, Jaworski said he would not take him.
“I’m a big believer in Nick Foles, but who knows?” Jaworski said. “Manziel may fall. I’m not crazy about him, to be honest with you. I’ve only looked at five games. I wouldn’t take him in the first three rounds. That’s my opinion. It’s incomplete right now. But he has not done a whole lot to me.”
It’s a bit strange that Jaworski — a noted quarterback guru — has watched college football’s most high-profile signal-caller play just five times. Jaws certainly is not one to shy away from bold predictions, but it would be stunning if Manziel is even around by the end of the first round, never mind the third.
