Jeremy Abbott falls in short program in SochiFour-time U.S. figure skating champion Jeremy Abbott fell so hard Thursday night in Sochi that the music stopped, but after taking a few seconds to collect himself, he resumed and finished his short program routine at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Abbott faltered after attempting a quadruple toe loop, which caused him to flip onto the ice and launch into the boards. He appeared to clutch his right hip in pain for several moments until he rose to complete his program.

Abbott quickly redeemed himself by landing a triple-lutz-triple toe combination and a triple axel. The audience cheered in astonishment at his ability to recover with ease from such a severe spill.

Abbott’s performance landed him in 15th place.

“I’m not the least bit ashamed,” Abbott said, via ESPN. “I stood up and I finished that program, and I’m proud of my effort and I’m proud of what I did under the circumstance.”
