Team USA men’s hockey coach Dan Bylsma is keeping the cards close to his vest when it comes to his goaltending plan.
The Pittsburgh Penguins bench boss, who is the U.S. coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics, is not giving away any information when it comes to his goalies. Bylsma tabbed Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick as his starter for Thursday’s tournament opener against Slovakia, but he’s not willing to say who will go next.
The Americans are off until Saturday, when they play a very solid Russia team. Bylsma wouldn’t announce his starting goaltender for that game following the United States’ 7-1 win over Slovakia.
The two options are Quick, who stopped 21 of 22 shots in Thursday’s win, and Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. While Quick was impressive in his Olympic debut, Miller has proved he can handle the Olympics. The veteran netminder went 5-1-0 with a .946 save percentage and 1.35 goals against average while helping the Americans to a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
