The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, whose February release of bacon-themed uniforms attracted national attention, have sold thousands of bacon shirts and hats in the first few weeks of availability, the team says.

The IronPigs called their marketing campaign “#SmellTheChange,” and with scratch-and-sniff T-shirts that guarantee the smell of fresh bacon through 10 washes, fans are jumping at the opportunity to wear the team’s unique new gear.

Kurt Landes, IronPigs president and general manager, says his team’s surge in sales will be tough for any other minor league team to beat in 2014.

“People clearly love bacon and baseball, and we just hit a nerve by putting it together on our official gear,” Landes said, via ESPN.com. “We had orders from all 50 states in the first 36 hours.”

The IronPigs are planning to apply the bacon theme to their ballpark this season by selling bacon-flavored concessions and developing a race that includes a bacon-eating challenge.
