This goal will help Blaise Matuidi earn a spot on France’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The midfielder scored his first international goal Wednesday in France’s 2-0 win over the Netherlands.

Matuidi already had provided the assist for Karim Benzema’s opener when he scored a wonder goal in the 41st minute. Matuidi ran unmarked into the Netherlands’ penalty area and turned Mathieu Valbuena’s cross into a goal with an acrobatic volley.

The goal thrilled the crowd at the Stade de France and impressed Zlatan Ibrahimovic — Matuidi’s club teammate at Paris Saint-Germain and author of countless highlight-reel goals.

Wednesday’s game was France’s last before manager Didier Deschamps names his provisional squad for the World Cup. It’s safe to say Matuidi advanced his case for inclusion with the standout performance.
