The Boston Bruins clinched the Atlantic Division title with a 4-2 victory against the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon at the Verizon Center.
They also extended their point streak to 15 games (14-0-1).
The division championship is the Bruins’ fourth since 2008, and it guarantees them home-ice advantage in at least the first two rounds of the postseason.
Boston will enter Sunday’s slate of games with a nine-point lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins for the top seed in the East.
If the Bruins finish as the top seed in the conference, they will play the second wild-card team in the first round. A second-place finish in the East would give the B’s a matchup with the first wild-card team.
The last time that the B’s finished atop the Eastern Conference was in 2008-09.
Boston also has a chance to win the Presidents’ Trophy with the NHL’s best record. The Bruins (108 points) have a one-point edge over St. Louis, but the Blues can regain the lead with a win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.
The B’s haven’t won the Presidents’ Trophy since 1989-90.
