Montreal Canadiens defenseman Josh Gorges had surgery Monday to repair a hand fracture, sidelining him for the next month.
Gorges reportedly was injured when he blocked a shot with his hand against the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 1. He played in the first two games of the Canadiens’ West Coast swing last week but flew home early to be examined, missing games against the Phoenix Coyotes and San Jose Sharks.
The team announced Monday that it estimates a four-week recovery time for the 29-year-old blueliner.
Gorges, who has been with the Habs since 2007, has a goal and 12 assists in 63 games this season. He ranks third on the team in average time on ice (21:14) behind Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban.
Montreal hosts the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night.
