Mike Modano is considered by many as the greatest American-born NHL player of all-time.
The Michigan native spent the first 20 of his 21 professional seasons with the Dallas Stars, who retired his No. 9 during a special ceremony before the team’s game against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.
Modano tallied 557 goals (including nine 30-goal seasons) and 802 assists in his career with the Stars, and played a key part in the team’s first and only Stanley Cup title during the 1998-99 season. He’s also a two-time U.S. Olympian and a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
In addition to his statistical brilliance, Modano significantly increased the popularity of hockey in the Dallas market.
