If David Moyes is feeling the heat under the seat, he’s not about to make it known.
Speculation that Moyes’ job as Manchester United manager is under threat has grown in recent days, but Moyes told reporters Tuesday that he has heard no such thing from within the club.
“My future has not changed one bit,” Moyes said, according to the Press Association. “I have got a great job, know exactly the direction I want to go in.
“The biggest assurance is that (the board) let me get on with the job. … We talk about the future. We make big plans going forward. That is why they gave me a six-year contract. This is not a club that works on a short-term vision. It is a long-term one.”
Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool all but ended Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League, heaping more pressure on Moyes.
Reports saying Manchester United’s board has discussed firing Moyes arose Monday, but the Scot insists he will remain at the helm for the long haul.
Yet, that could change in the coming weeks, despite Moyes’ comments. If Olympiacos eliminates Manchester United from the Champions League on Wednesday (the Red Devils must overturn a 2-0 deficit), consigning Moyes’ team to a trophy-less season, fans could turn on their embattled manager and effectively signal the end of his brief reign at Old Trafford.
