It’s not even Opening Day yet, and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly’s patience already seems to be growing thin with right fielder Yasiel Puig.
Puig burst onto the scene last season, quickly becoming a polarizing figure in Major League Baseball with his solid skills and diva attitude, and the 23-year-old is doing more of the same this season. In the Dodgers’ season-opening series in Australia against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Puig went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in L.A.’s 7-5 win Saturday.
But Puig also was thrown out twice on the basepaths and left the game in the ninth with an apparent injury, which drew Mattingly’s ire. Mattingly “playfully compared Puig to the boy who cried wolf” after the game, according to ESPN.com.
“Shoulder yesterday, back today, so I’m not sure if they’re going to get him tests or get him to the MRI Monday or a bone scan on Tuesday, maybe,” Mattingly said sarcastically. “I’m not quite sure what we’ll do. We may not do anything. I’m not sure.”
Puig is batting .300 with one run and one RBI through the first two games of the season.
