Jake Peavy Injury Update: Right-Hander To Throw Bullpen Session Wednesday

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Boston Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy will resume baseball activities at JetBlue Park on Tuesday, manager John Farrell said.

Peavy, who was scratched from his spring training start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday because of a cut on his left index finger suffered during a fishing knife accident Saturday, will throw long toss at Fenway South on Tuesday, Farrell said. The plan is for Peavy to throw a bullpen session (without a glove) on Wednesday.

“The precaution that we have to take right now is just making sure he doesn’t perspire too much,” Farrell said. “That might cause some bacteria, whatever, to get into the incision that’s still closing up.”

Farrell said the next three days will go a long way toward determining if Peavy will be ready for his next start. The Red Sox haven’t ruled out the possibility, and the club hasn’t yet experimented with a new glove featuring extra padding.

“Hopefully, by the time he gets closer to being game ready, the bandage that he’s currently wearing will be a heck of a lot smaller,” Farrell said. “But we’ll address that as it gets closer.”

Peavy said Monday that the cut is on his knuckle.
