Josh Beckett’s comeback has hit a rather unusual snag.
The Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander shook his head Wednesday as he told reporters that a thumb sprain suffered when he got his hand caught in a clubhouse door 10 days earlier could force him to miss his next start.
Beckett said he had trouble getting a grip on his off-speed pitches during a Tuesday bullpen session.
“I come back from thoracic outlet syndrome, and this is what I’m dealing with,” he said, via the Los Angeles Times.
Surgery to alleviate that nerve condition limited Beckett to just eight starts in 2013, his first full season with the Dodgers after being traded by the Boston Red Sox the summer before.
Beckett got off to a solid start in spring training, tossing two scoreless innings in his first appearance last week. He was scheduled to start Friday against the Chicago Cubs. Instead, he’s now hoping to return to the mound after the Dodgers’ season-opening series in Australia, thanks to yet another bizarre spring training injury.
